Desk Chair Redo

October 3, 2011 at 6:45 pm (Projects) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

I was in an office chair conundrum at the new house.  The office is large enough to hold the futon, DVD rack, desk, book shelf, and even file cabinet.  But, its just not very comfortable.  I loved using the comfy and gorgeous blue wingback chair in my last home office, but in this office there just isn’t enough space for a nice layout with the chair.  So, the blue wingback moved to our bedroom.  More pictures of that to come.  Then there was no office chair.  What to do?

During a recent (and quick) trip down to the creepy basement to store a few boxes I noticed a computer chair with wheels! It was ugly.  No other way to put it.  But, it was sturdy and heavy duty, and in good shape other than the abused crudiness of it.

The before:

First step? Remove the ugly arms.  Then it was some paint and fabric…

Not too bad, eh?

So, what do you think?  I think for being a completely free project it turned out super cute and will work for us for a while, while we have zero money. Oh, and don’t worry about the BRIGHT red walls.  Come winter they will no longer be so obnoxious.  It is especially strong paired with a big red filing cabinet and on the other wall is a red futon and ottoman! lol.

Glam Chair Love

July 13, 2011 at 8:25 am (Inspiration) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Everything in my inspiration folder has been a bit country lately.  I suppose I can blame that on the new (old) farmhouse we will soon be moving into.  But, no matter what style rooms I am concocting, I think there is always room for a bit of glamour.

I stumbled upon a bunch of lovely chairs at Desire to Inspire (Kim also has a love of chairs), and this shiny, glamorous one stood out to me.  I think I could get a bit of this style to work with some of the other rooms I have posted lately.

The photo was originally from Rue Magazine.  See the rest of Kim’s awesome chair post here.

I immediately fell in love with this gorgeous room!  You all know I can’t resist dark, dramatic walls.  And when paired with another glamorous rustic chandelier?  Well, lets just say I was in heaven!

I can only hope to pull together such a chic room someday! Swoon.

My Own Chair Love

June 2, 2011 at 6:40 pm (Projects) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Here’s a chair that I inherited and eventually redid.  I love these basic old wood chairs, but the white chipping paint and scratches on this one were in need of some help.

First I sanded the chair down until it was nice and smooth using a palm sander.  I then made sure to clean and dry the chair very well.  I first painted the bottom portion of the legs black.  Once that was very dry I taped off each leg at the same place and proceeded to paint the rest of the chair with a fun silver spray paint.  The final step was an idea I wanted to try, which proved to be the most work of all.  I used black nail head trim nails to form a pattern around the seat.  I measure where I wanted the nails to go and made small marks with a pencil.  Eventually, this step proved to be useless and I was off of my marks anyways.  Ah well, trial and error with a new project.  I also learned that tapping these nails in with a hammer scratched and smashed the nails, as they have a black finish on them.  I found that covering the nail with a small piece of cardboard from the packaging after it was in place, and giving it one good tap with the hammer was the most effect and precise way to apply these.  My pattern still ended up a little bit off, but overall I like the idea and would love to try it on one of my chairs for the shop now that I have my technique down.  I lastly tied on a pink and purple vintage scarf to tie the chair into the bedroom (which you will all see eventually!) So, here she is…
