The Landing Strip

A landing strip, a command center, the drop spot. No matter what you call it, every house should have one. It’s a place for all the family “stuff”.

I call it a landing strip. In this house we actually have it split up a little, but it’s whatever works for you! When you come in our backdoor, we have hooks for each family member. Bag and coat go there. There’s a little hook station for car keys. And we have a small rack holding bug spray, sunscreen, sunglasses, wireless speaker, etc. But there’s still other “stuff” that accumulates. What do you do with it?! Enter our landing strip.

He we have a stash spot for everything else so that we stay organized and don’t lose important things! We use the chalk board for calendar notes and grocery lists. And each of the boys and mom and dad have a basket. We put bills in ours. The boys put homework and such in theirs. I keep a pen jar on the shelf. Here is stash stamps, a candle lighter, a marker, and pens. If you need more than that they you have to go upstairs to the office. 😆

The antique mirror got a metal insert painted with chalk paint. The little chalk marker tray below it is an antique door stop out of an old barn. The baskets are from Hobby Lobby. The shelf is a custom design I requested from Jason. He added and welded the flourish at the top of the brackets.

Here’s my tid bit of advice. Have a place for the “stuff”, whatever you may call it. I truly believe in “a place for everything and everything in its place.” Even if you don’t organize that far, at least set up a zone with a calendar and pens and notepad. Have a spot where you put mail and homework. Always put your keys in the same location. I promise you that these tricks will prevent you from losing important things or searching frantically for the lost items!

And just for fun, here’s a shot of what it looks like more often than not. 😉

Anything else you would add?

XX,

Jess

Wax Seals

June 23, 2009 at 7:11 am (Tid Bits, Wedding Plans) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

When we first got engaged I happened to find a W stamp and some silver wax on sale.  Of course I snagged it, but we have yet to use it.  Although I’m not technically a “W” yet, we decided to test out the seal on our thank you’s from our engagement party.  They turned out pretty cool!

Our supplies and our blank thank you notes:

Tony melted the wax for me.  We did a few practice runs, but he started to get it down pat.

He said it worked best to slowly swirl the wax stick around while on fire, then as it drips to move the wax into a larger circle.  I then stamped the wax with the seal, and viola!

Simple, but fun and a very cute touch.  We thought we should make this our signature for all of our cards from now on.  And, it was fun to do together!

Lawn Chair Paint Project

June 19, 2009 at 7:54 am (Projects) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

I got the new lawn chairs done just in time for the party.  Remember these sweet but boring old fashioned lawn chairs we picked up?

Well, with some bright paint and a bit of handy work, they are now unique and look good together!

What do you think?  I think pretty soon all of these random tid bits will come together!

Lawn Chairs and Cookouts

June 5, 2009 at 8:01 am (Home Changes and Additions, Projects) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Yesterday I finally got the garage sale lawn chairs finished!  Remember the old blue metal set we got for $10?  The one that looked like it belonged next to pink plastic flamingos in, well, not our yard?  Yes, those are nice shiny black now!  Before:

Now:

All we needed was a couple fun cushions.  Well, that has been a task.  Since these chairs are so old no cushions are the right size!  And, have you noticed how dull this year’s “summer” colors are?  Blah!  But, we stopped in at K-Mart just to check, and found a decent, fun and bright set.  Not what we thought we wanted, but it will work for this year!  They are a bit different shape, but when you sit in them and squish them down they are perfect.  I would also like to add a couple red throw pillows to match the ones we would like to throw on the hammock (coming soon!).  Here’s what we have so far:

Better!  And Tony even helped me pick ’em out!  So, we decided to celebrate a productive day (and the fact that it didn’t rain!) by grilling out and having dinner at the picnic table.

The pups even joined in!  Have a great weekend!

P.S.  Just for the record, the blue on the chairs was a really pretty color.  But, we have a lot of red in our yard and it just wasn’t matching what we wanted to do out there.  But, after already painted the set black we realized the new cushions do have the exact blue in them!  Oh, well, sticking to the plan!  Now they are versatile enough to change our minds on cushions all the time! (if they weren’t so ridiculously expensive!)

This week I thought I would feature a chair that is going in the shop!  This robins egg blue shell chair is marked “Krueger Metal Products Green Bay, Wisconsin” on the bottom.  Isn’t it just so cute?

Lawn Chair Project

April 28, 2009 at 7:30 am (Projects) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

It hasn’t stopped raining here for days, so please excuse the dark, dreary photos.  But, I had to share the other garage sale day find with you.  Lawn chairs!  They were a steal, and they will be fixed up with some paint and cushions, so don’t be alarmed!  Right now I think they kind of look like they belong next to some plastic flamingos in, well, not my yard.  But, they will.

Really that shade of blue is bright and fun, and has started to grow on me.  But, I think it would look out of place in our back yard.  I’m not sure what color I am thinking, however.  I know we always lean towards black.  We are blah.  But, black might bring them up to date and they could be dressed up and brightened with some bold patterned cushions.  Yes? No?  Ideas?  Always something to work on, but I love it! 🙂

Also, I wanted to let you all know that I am going to start selling off some of our projects.  I love to keep busy and remake fun things, but our house is getting full.  So, I am going to keep doing what I love, but start selling the things I make or remake.  Right now I have a coffee table in the works, so stay tuned.  I will post befores and afters of the items I plan to sell.  For now they will be listed on Craigslist, or you can contact me through the blog.  But, we are thinking that in the future I might rent a booth at one of our local antique shops.  Check back, and let me know if you are interested in anything, or are looking for something in particular! 🙂

Typewriter Table Detailed

April 14, 2009 at 8:44 am (Projects) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Sorry, I forgot to upload new pictures yesterday. But, today you get to see a lot of progress from the weekend! Here is the typewriter table that I showed you before.  It is now finished and detailed!

Once I finished the second coat of white spray paint I arranged cardboard scrap-booking stencils in the placement I liked.  I traced and filled the stencils with a paint pen.  These little guys work great!  I have used it on a couple of projects now and it always does the trick.  I think it is super cute and ready to be used!
