Sheet Music Table

I have had this little vintage fold-up table sitting in the closet for a while now.  My grandma had given it to me, cracked green paint and all.  I would stare at it now and then, uninspired, but I knew an idea would eventually come to me.

Finally one day last week the idea did come to me!  Sheet music!  I happened to have some old sheet music, some Mod Podge, and even some ribbon and scrap book supplies.  I, of course, forgot the before picture.  And this was one of those that would have been good to have!  But, after working on this project all weekend, I am finally finished and I really like the results.

 

 

 

 

I later read somewhere that in order to keep the ripples and bubbles from occurring you can dampen your paper before adding Mod Podge.  I will definitely try that next!  But for a first try, I think it turned out super cute!  What do you all think?

A Few New Scrapbook Pages

I have been getting some things done over my past blogging absence!  I accomplished many many scrapbook pages.  Here is a peak at just a few.  I hope these inspire you scrapbookers out there!  Feel free to ask any questions!

I personally like my pages to be handwritten.  I like the imperfections and mistakes.  It makes them feel more personal to me.  My pages are also always original.  Personalizing is my best advice for scrapbookers, it will always mean more in the end!

An Office Project Finished

As I said before, I have recently started a new job.  With that has come a new, but bland, office.  So, I got to work.  The first project I have completed is a table for the office.  I found this ugly guy with a paper top for a couple of dollars at the thrift store:

I started by sanding the wood legs and sides a bit and then painting them black.  I then used scrapbook paper on the top.  I taped the paper down, starting with a full sheet in the very middle of the table.  When the sheets were lined up nicely, I used ModPodge to cover the sheets, using a foam brush.  I did several coats of this, drying in between.

One thing I learned from using the ModPodge was that it makes the paper wet, so at first it will bubble up.  This smooths out as it dries.  But, I did make the mistake of lining the paper sheets up perfectly edge to edge.  Lining them up with a bit of overlap would have prevented the sheets from moving as they dried.  I do have a few tiny spots where there are gaps between the paper now.  I learned! 🙂

My Office and Easy Tips

We did do work at home over the weekend, really.  But, the snow on Sunday (snow!?) hindered us from accomplishing too much.  I will have a few things to show you later on in the week, but for today I am going to show you my work office. 

When I started at this job one of the first I thought about was how to dress up my first personal office.  I wanted to create a fun and unique work space without spending a bunch of money.  Of course I was not about to go out and buy new furniture, but I do have a few simple and very cheap ideas for dressing up the drab office.  Although you may not be able to produce your dream office with a space that you don’t own, you can make it a comfortable and productive space!

1. Posters.   Not the priciest artwork, but good enough for a work office.  I hung the Keep Calm poster as you enter my doorway (Yup, cliche maybe, but I still love it!).  I also hung an inspirational quote from Muhammad Ali on the opposite wall.  These were so fitting as I work in a hospital as a medical case manager.  And, they give me some color, but stay in the basics I love!

2.  Use your printer.  I made these blah magnets cute by printing a sheet of white paper with a paisley pattern.  I cut the sheets down to the size of the magnets and glued them on.  I then covered them with clear plastic tape.  I also used paper to fill the letter opener magnet.  The other side of the desk is a sheet of paper I printed with the Chinese symbol for “happiness.”  I have a few printed quotes around the office as well.  These are cheap enough to switch out once in a while too!

3. Paper flowers.  I wanted to add some brightness to my office, but am horrible at caring for plants.  So, I made paper roses with tissue paper.  I stuck them in a thrift store vase and now have flowers all year round. (the candy is a crowd pleaser as well)

4. Organization!  Staying organized is the simplest, cheapest way to keep an office space looking its best.  I have some open shelves that I make sure are always orderly.  This is also a good time saver.  I always know where things are and never have to hunt!

5. Personal but professional.  A nice touch to an office space is something personal.  But, remember to keep it professional.  Too many pictures or tchochkes can make an office space cluttered and unprofessional.  I have some pictures hung and framed in my office, but only ones that I don’t mind if clients see.  I have a magic 8 ball on my desk for those real tough decisions as well ;).  My desk top is also an example of keeping organized.  And, the calendar is a free printable version from calendarsthatwork.com.  I love these, as they look cute and are simple instead of busy!  Also notice my mouse pad and pen.  Little touches that were inexpensive!

Some Color In The Pocket Office

Over the weekend I made a few tiny but fun changes to the pocket office.  First, I added some bright red paper to the blah sides of the drawer set under the desk.  It looked as if it had just been stashed under there, but now it looks as if it was intended to be there.  I also tried to eliminate some clutter.  I took down the picture mobile, arranged some of the hanging photos on the inspiration wire, and changed the art a bit.

I had seen online where framing simple art in a blank CD case can be easy to swap and add a fun punch to your walls for little money.  So, I hung three of these CD case frames with some strange art in them above the desk.  The art was small, cluttered, and mismatched.  I changed the art out to something more simple and in the color scheme.  I then hung them vertically to contrast with the inspiration wire.  I think this is starting to look much better than my original office a few months ago!

Scrap-booking Question

I have been scrap-booking since I was in high school. I love taking photos and loving preserving memories, so this is quickly became one of my favorite hobbies. Due to being extremely busy I quit scrap-booking for a few years almost completely. The other day I found some very adorable paper and was so inspired I have started scrap-booking again full force. (The paper was from Micheal’s, which I recommend!).

I have come across a small problem, however, that I am hoping you out there in the blog world can help me with. My supplies are currently stored in about 4 different boxes. I rummage through the boxes when I am in search of inspiration or the perfect color of paper. The are constantly getting messy and unmanageable. The boxes are not uniform, either, which makes them hard to store. I am such a neat freak that this is really bothering me. I have seen carrying cases for sale that are meant for scrap-booking, but they are ridiculously overpriced!

My dilemma: I am insearch of an affordable, possibly DIY solution to the scrapbooking mess!

I was thinking that sticker sheets and paper might be categorized and sorted in some sort of accordion type portfolio folder (Wal-Mart even carries on in a black and white damask pattern!). But, the 12′ x12′ sheets of paper might not fit in one of those. What do you think? Suggestions?

I’m A {Wedding} Geek

Yup, its true. I’m a geek. I love to plan, and organize, and make lists, and check things off…

So, planning for the wedding is no different. I decided to put the wedding planning ideas onto paper and stay organized. There are so many thoughts bouncing around in my head right now, this was the only way to keep sane!

I checked into wedding planners. But, they seemed like a crazy waste of money, as they can be upwards of $50! Some are very cute, and yes, it is a great way to keep the memories of the process, and even pass the information along to other brides-to-be, but…

I decided (after very little debate) to make my own. I got a thin, white three-ring binder and put tabs in it. I labeled the tabs into categories I thought would be most helpful. These tabs have changed a few times, but I think I finally have it. I also bought some cute post-it notes and sticky tabs to make notes and mark things. I have scoured the blog world for ideas and inspiration, and have used these resources to put the information into the planner. Everything will be at my fingertips. I even found printable versions of budgets and timelines to keep the planner organized. Other images in the planner have come from various bridal magazines. As we get closer to the big day we won’t miss a single detail with my geeky planning skills and my beautiful, new, handmade, planner.

These are the tabs I have used so far:

  7. Invitations

These tabs could be different for everyone, but since I am doing almost everything myself, I had to keep many different categories. I am also splitting some of the categories down further into sub-categories, such as Reception Ideas. There will be tabs for things such as cakes, flowers and tables. I also inserted to clear pocket pouches in the binder, one for contracts and one for reciepts. This way the items in the pockets do not need holes punched in them.

P.S. My materials for this planner all came from Wal-Mart. They are very inexpensive, and have a pretty good selection. Yes, there are beautiful papers online, but I was to impatient to wait for something to come in the mail. The black and white damask post-its are adoarable and affordable there. That print is also available in many other supplies!
